I can’t tell you how many kitchens I’ve designed in my 18 years of residential design experience. Hundreds, I’d guess. I can say that almost all of my homeowner clients wanted gas cooktops or ranges – the more BTUs, the better. Very few were receptive to considering induction as a healthier, safer, more energy efficient and easier-to-live-with alternative. Too few in my opinion.
I’ve loved induction technology since I first tried it in 2008 at a Monogram designer training program. (My first-ever Gold Notes blog post from July 2008 was induction-related.) I didn’t even know the science back then about the dangerous chemicals gas appliances leach into people’s kitchens! I do now! And I wrote about it in my latest Forbes.com article. The next update on this kitchen will likely feature an
induction cooktop instead of gas.

I get a ton of cool products sent to my inbox; it’s what happens when you’ve been writing about design for years, I suppose. I thought I’d share a few I find especially interesting with Gold Notes readers with the caveat that I haven’t vetted all of them. This one I have!
I did a bit of research on personal air purifiers and found this one to have extraordinarily powerful filtration, superior to all of the portable models I checked out. It’s ozone-free, as well, which is important. (Not all of them are, and you don’t want one of those!)

What:
IQAir‘s Atem Desk is a personal air purifier with exceptional capture capability and nicely quiet operation. It’s marketed for home office use, which is where I have mine at the moment, but you can pretty much use it in any room, I’d imagine. It’s even quiet enough to sleep near. There is a power pack and car charger for use on the road, but it’s a bit large to pack in carry-on luggage for a short trip.

Why:
Air purification has become an even more critical feature for our homes, especially with dangerous viruses, pollution and wildfire smoke and ash in our environments. Not everyone is in a position to upgrade their home’s heating and ventilation system; some folks rent, rather than own, too. A portable air purifier can help keep their spaces safer and healthier.
