NUGGETS FROM THE WORLD OF RESIDENTIAL DESIGN
Martha Stewart Wants To Protect Your Home From El Niño (NEW POST)

I’ll admit to being a worrier. If it’s not genetic, (nature), it was definitely nurtured into me by a mother predisposed to worrying. It has stood me in good stead when it comes to preparing for the worst, (while hoping for the best).

Since this season promises to be a super rainy one along the West Coast, thanks to a weather phenomenon known as El Niño, I thought I’d do some research. Here’s what I learned about protecting my home — and yours — thanks to some terrific experts. It will probably surprise you to know that the grand dame of domestic bliss is one of them! (Well, indirectly, through a new app she’s launched. More about that below.)

FIRST IMPRESSIONS

shower with folding wood seat and matching grab barA gorgeous spa-inspired grab bar debuts!
(Ponte Giulio)

I earned my Certified Aging in Place Specialist credential almost two decades ago, and what I’ve learned since then is that no one likes the “A word,” as I call aging. We tend to think of ourselves as ever-young, but sometimes an injury or illness can impact our balance and mobility.  One of the places that becomes especially challenging is in our primary bathrooms. I’ve long recommended designer-inspired grab bars (or at least blocking for them) to clients of all ages. This new REAL Wood Grab Bar is, by far, the most beautiful, designer-friendly model I’ve ever seen! I’d have it in my own home for sure.

It comes in two lengths, 18″ and 24″, (both 1.25″ diameter and ADA qualifying), is made of ash wood with a water resistant cherry finish and polished stainless steel ends. It’s rated to support up to 330 pounds and can be installed in a tub-shower or stand-alone sower. (It’s not designed for saunas or ice chambers.) There’s more information available on the company’s digital catalogue, (page 43).

Homeowners can order them through Best Grab Bars, Wayfair and others. If you want your primary suite to feel more like a resort spa than a residential facility, this is a great way to help achieve that aesthetic!
