Confession time: I don’t play poker. I don’t have a poker face, a poker brain or poker pals. So what inspired this topic, you might ask? It was a domain. When I was registering my new website, I learned that jamiegold.com was taken. Naturally, I had to go look at a site using my preferred name. I did. It has nothing to do with design or wellness. It belongs to a world class poker player with the same name and a Y chromosome. I didn’t think much about it or him until my publisher pointed out that a few of my articles had been associated by Google with his site, rather than mine, and until I spotted his Twitter handle dubbing him as the “real” Jamie Gold. I am too, dude! So I decided to pen a piece I thought might be interesting to both of our audiences — on how to make a poker room more wellness design-friendly. Here it is, with insights from the designer of the Bellagio’s poker room, one of the highest-rated on the Vegas strip!
This poker room was designed for wellness and fun

‘TIS THE SEASON
- Did you shop for your holiday gifts on Black Friday or Cyber Monday? My favorite observance is Small Business Saturday! And my favorite small businesses are independent booksellers. If you’re a fan of these smart, hardy folks too, you can support your favorite with a purchase through two new websites. My Wellness by Design book is a great holiday, wedding, new baby or housewarming gift. You can find it on both of those sites without leaving the comfort and safety of your home. Here are links to the book on Bookshop.org and Indie Bound. (Even if your local bookseller on these sites doesn’t have the book in stock, it can be ordered and sent your way or to your gift recipient.) And here’s an excerpt from the San Diego Union-Tribune if you’d like to check it out first.
- Yesterday was Giving Tuesday, a way to support your favorite charities. Two of mine that are wellness design related are Fisher House Foundation, which provides free housing to military families while their service member or vet is being treated at a nearby hospital, and Homes for Our Troops, which builds accessible private houses for wounded warriors.
