This season has seen some nice updates to Chez J, the three-story San Diego townhouse I call home.

Master Suite

The master suite got a new coat of paint on its walls and ceilings.  It also got new three-inch Colonial crown molding throughout, (not counting the closet).  This molding is a smaller version of the crown on the lower floors.

Both of those have nine-foot ceilings, and can handle the larger size.  I wanted something similar for the two third floor suites, so I chose a smaller version for scale and consistency.  I couldn’t be happier!

I love how the pale Jersey Cream ceiling paint sets off the white crown and complements the wall colors in both bedroom suites.   While Jersey Cream is a Sherwin-Williams color, I actually had it made up in Behr flat paint, as I also used their Premium Plus Ultra for the walls in both suites (and my office and powder room several years ago).

These are (approximately) the wall colors I chose.  The blue walls were inspired by a soft blue wool throw that sits on the white bed and the blue in a needlepoint pillow.   The paint I chose was Behr‘s Brittany Blue, (apparently a regional color and not available everywhere or online).

The blue sets off the black vanity and armoire perfectly!   (I will share pictures after the ugly carpet is replaced, which won’t be for quite a while.)

The new carpet will look something like this,  and its color will complement the paint and existing tile in both bathrooms.  I like to go with similar colors for carpet and tile to enhance visual flow and spaciousness.

Second Suite

I’m fortunate to have two bedrooms with en suite baths.  I actually use the second one myself for several reasons.  One, I don’t need the double vanity, but many of my guests do.  Two, my master bedroom has two twin beds pushed together as a king.  They can be separated when gal pals, nephews or nieces come to visit.  That wouldn’t work in the smaller, second suite.  Last, but definitely not least, the second suite has a nicer view onto the mountains, which I really enjoy looking out on as I start my day.

This suite got Behr‘s Ancestry Violet walls, with the same colonial crown molding and Jersey Cream ceiling paint.  Yes, the purple was a risk, you might say.  But it’s a soft plummy tone that makes me smile when I see it, and complements the rich walnut tones in the cabinetry.  Plus, it will work beautifully with the future carpet.

Garage Storage

The least glam, but most welcoming Chez J enhancement, was new garage storage.  I’m pretty OCD about clutter and have long disliked seeing the bins and piles of things sitting on the floor every time I come home.  They were necessary, but now they’re necessary and neat.

Not a big deal to most, but three of these big units lined against one wall is 12 feet of organized pleasure!  One holds career, recycling and donation items.  One holds my sporting goods, (yes, that requires its own shelving unit!).  The last one holds household items, like all of those big Costco packages of paper towels and cleaning supplies.  I now smile when I’m in my garage, and find things more easily, too.

Last Words

I follow the same Sensible Style advice for my own home that I give to my clients:  Choose elements that fit your home’s architecture and style, fit the neighborhood and fit the home’s value.  One could argue that the second suite’s plummy paint is a risk, but it’s easy and affordable to change if I need to later.  In the meantime, I’m enjoying the heck out of it.

Here are two more Chez J posts:

A Chez J Thanksgiving
Chez J Update #1

One of these years, I’ll finish each room with that final element, (e.g., leather club recliner chair for office) and get them all photographed.   I hope you enjoy these “backstage views” in the meantime.
