Wellness-Friendly Laundry-Mud Rooms Are a Big 2024 Home Trend Prediction

I grew up in a home with its washer-dryer pair in the darkest corner of our basement, next to the oil burner, and two flights down from our bedrooms. Laundry was not a pleasant task for my mom, I’m sure. When my ex and I built our Tampa home, I added art, white cabinets and a decorative skirt to the utility sink, brightening one of my least favorite chores.

According to home improvement platform Houzz, combined laundry-mud rooms will be a hot trend for 2024. I know I’ll want one for my next house. (Right now, my townhouse has a laundry closet, which I have made more functional with hooks, shelves and a wall-mounted hand vac.

Here is a link to my latest article with a bunch of ideas from design, building and remodeling pros for your laundry-mud room space at home. Hope you find them helpful and inspiring.

I get a ton of cool products sent to my inbox; it’s what happens when you’ve been writing about design for years, I suppose. I thought I’d share a few I find especially interesting with Gold Notes readers with the caveat that I haven’t vetted all of them. This one I have!

It’s a floor model air purifier with HEPA filtration for large rooms called Germ Guardian 4-in-1 Air Purifier. The company that makes it is called Lasko. I like that it’s sleek, compact, quiet and effective! This appliance reduces 99.97% of dust and allergens. It also helps eliminate bacteria and viruses, hugely helpful at this time of year (and in hay fever seasons). I gave one of these to my cello teacher to keep himself and his other students healthier. He loves it too!

Promotion for Wellness by Design book bonus chapter with original cover featuring kitchen sink with herb holder.

When I wrote my latest book and sent in the final manuscript, I had no idea that a pandemic was going to be hitting us in a matter of weeks. (WELLNESS BY DESIGN published in September 2020 when we were deep into it.)

We’ve experienced a great deal of national crises in the three years since  – including some of the worst wildfires and hurricanes – so I thought a bonus chapter would be helpful for readers. Here are some of the topics that are covered:

  • Adding resilience to your home
  • Insights and benefits of multi-generational living
  • Tips on noise reduction
  • How and why to create flex spaces
  • Importance of access to nature
  • New advances in smart home technology – what’s next!
